Harris comics decided that it might be a good idea to let their many Vampirella fans see what all the fuss was about "way back when", so they (re)published the first ever Vampirella magazine from 1969.

Almost identical to the original, the content is the same right down to the pages of adverts for back issues of Eerie and Famous Monsters of Film land, Horror and SciFi paperback novels, ant farms and silent dog whistles! Apart from the fact that the 2001 edition is in new/mint condition there are a few clues to let you know that this is the reprint:-

  • Inside Pages:
Page 2 - at the bottom of the page it states "Printed in Canada" which wasn't on the original.
Page 3 - the fine print at the bottom of the contents page credit the magazine publisher as Harris not Warren.

  • Front Cover:
The Vampi logo at the top left hand side is dated as OCT. not SEPT.
At the top right hand side under the Vampirella logo it states "A HARRIS MAGAZINE $4.95" instead of "A WARREN MAGAZINE 50¢".

Other than that, the reprint is identical (other than the limited editions which have different coloured foil on the Vampirella logo).

The first Vampirella story is a horror spoof rather than a straight horror tale, as was made obvious by the first two pages being taken up with a sequence of a nude Vampirella taking a shower for no particular reason, other than titillation.

TRIVIA

  • [1] Frazetta's cover of Vampirella was a substitute for the original cover by European artist Aslan. That cover also featured Vampirella, but was rejected over fears that Vampi looked rather pale! That cover was eventually used as the cover for the Vampirella 1972 Annual.

  • [2] On the contents page the first story is listed as Vampirella of Drakulon (spelled with a "K") but on the artwork of the page itself Drakulon is mis-spelled with a "C".
